In the Netherlands, more than three thousand breast augmentation procedures are carried out per year. A breast augmentation is done to add volume to the breasts or to reshape them. With a breast augmentation, your breasts will look natural and firm.
Treating surgeons breast augmentation
During the first and free consultation, you and your attending plastic surgeon will discuss the breast augmentation, from the preparation to the aftercare, and we will answer all your questions about the procedure. After the consultation with the specialist, you will also meet with one of our consultants.
The breast augmentation procedure
Breast augmentation can be a major step, so we will carefully explain the entire process of the breast augmentation surgery.
The first consultation
You and the plastic surgeon will discuss your wishes about the size and shape of your breasts. This indication is based on the current shape of your breasts, possible asymmetry, the elasticity of your skin, and the location of the nipples and areola. Together, you will decide on the type of implants. These can either be round or teardrop (anatomically) shaped implants. It goes without saying that we only use certified, medically safe implants which are authorised by the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sports. The surgeon will then indicate where the scar area will be and whether the breast implants will be placed in front of or (obliquely) behind the chest muscle. You will also receive further explanation about the possible risks and complications of a breast augmentation procedure involving breast implants. Besides using implants, increasingly more breast augmentations are done by lipofilling (fat grafting). Click here for more information about lipofilling.
The breast augmentation procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia. During the procedure, a breast implant is positioned in front of or (obliquely) behind the chest muscle. The plastic surgeon will discuss the location with you during the first consultation. The implants are placed via an incision in the crease underneath the breast. A cavity is made of a size that will perfectly fit the breast implant. The skin is then closed with dissolvable sutures. When necessary, a plaster bandage is placed on the breasts.
After the surgery
It is important to have sufficient rest during the first few days after the surgery. You will be able to resume light work activities and desk work after a few days. During the first two weeks, you should avoid heavy work and lifting. You can resume your sports activities after six weeks. Naturally, you will have to treat the area of the surgery with great care during the first few weeks. Your breasts will feel very firm in the beginning. This will change after some time and the breasts will feel more supple. The shape of the breasts will also change during the course of the first weeks after the surgery. The scars may look somewhat inflamed or red. This redness will disappear over the course of a year, after which they will take the colour of the skin and become less visible. Ultraviolet radiation is not good for scars, it may cause them to stay red for an unnecessarily long time. We advise you to keep the scars covered during the first months and not to expose your breasts to direct sunlight.
Resultats of a breast augmentation
The result of the breast augmentation can generally be predicted very well. It is, however, important that you make your wishes very clear to the attending plastic surgeon. Nevertheless, we cannot give a full guarantee on the aesthetic result. The scars you will have after the surgery will be about five centimetres long and they will be more or less invisible after a couple of months.

Risks and complications
Every surgical procedure has its risks and complications, and this also applies to breast augmentations. By providing you with the right information and care during the preparatory phase, we will reduce the risks. By following our instructions carefully during the period leading up to the breast augmentation surgery, you will minimise the chance of complications. Some possible complications of a breast augmentation include:
- Change of sensitivity in your breasts
- Allergic reactions to the anaesthesia or sutures
- Shifting and/or rupture of the breast implant
- Capsular contraction
- Swelling or bleeding
For complete information about the risks and complications, it is important that you read the surgical leaflet of the NVPC (Dutch Association for Plastic Surgery) carefully. We also notice that there are more and more questions about BII / ASIA and that is why you will find more information about this subject in this leaflet from the NVPC.
Since 2015, plastic surgeons have registered all breast implants that are placed or removed in the Netherlands in the DBIR. If you undergo breast correction surgery and receive implants, it is good to know that all surgery data is entered in this national breast implants register. In this way, the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery guarantees the quality of the prostheses. Of course, all personal data is anonymized and only in the event of a national recall can it be found out who has which prostheses. Read more about the DBIR registration here.
Breast enlargement experiences
“I was super nervous. But the whole experience was fantastic, from the moment I entered the clinic to the moment I left. This is the clinic and surgeon that I will recommend to anyone. And the most important thing after the surgery was the minimum amount of pain and a result to fall in love with!”
I had a breast augmentation carried out by lipofilling, and my physician was Dr Hay Winters. They used fat from my legs which was injected into my breasts. I can truly recommend Dr Winters and this clinic. The staff are extremely friendly and professional! A very nice and expert physician!
