Breast reduction

Many women suffer from breasts that are too heavy and/or pendulous as the weight of the breasts causes back, shoulder, and/or neck complaints. Some women may also feel embarrassed about the shape of their breasts. A breast reduction can offer a huge amount of relief.

  • Size and shape as you desire
  • Treatment plan based on your complaints
  • Our plastic surgeons are affiliated with the Dutch Societies for plastic surgery (NVPC and NVEPC)
  • Both male and female surgeons

Plastic surgeons

During the first consultation, you and the attending plastic surgeon will discuss the breast reduction procedure. Our surgeons specialise in performing the breast reduction procedure and we will guide you through the preparation, the treatment itself, and the aftercare.

In case of a medical indication a breast reduction is reimbursed by the health insurer.

The first consultation

You and one of our plastic surgeons will discuss your wishes about the size and shape of your breasts. It is important to assess whether your wishes with regard to the breast reduction are feasible. Additionally, the plastic surgeon will inform you about the risks and possible complications of the procedure.

The surgery

The breast reduction surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia. During the procedure, part of the mammary gland tissue and the accompanying skin will be removed. A new and smaller breast model will be shaped. The nipple will also be relocated.

There are several surgical techniques to perform a breast reduction. With the most common surgical techniques, the scars will be around both areolas, underneath the breast in the skin crease, and between the nipple and the crease underneath the breast in a vertical direction.

The wounds are closed with very fine sutures which will dissolve, depending on the location of the sutures. It may also be necessary to leave a drain which will ensure that possible excess blood and fluids can exit the wound. In consultation with the attending surgeon, you will spend one night at the Jan van Goyen Clinic. This happens in most cases.

After the surgery

The first day after the breast reduction surgery, you will have to have sufficient rest, but after a day or two, you can resume light work activities or desk work. Heavy work, such as vacuuming and lifting, must be avoided during the first two weeks. You can resume your sports activities after six weeks. Naturally, you will have to treat the area of the surgery with great care during the first few weeks.

The scars may first look somewhat inflamed or red. Over the course of a year, the redness will fade and they will take the colour of your skin and become less noticeable. Ultraviolet radiation is not good for scars, it may cause them to stay red for an unnecessarily long time. We advise you to keep the scars covered during the first months after the surgery or to apply sunblock. After the surgery, you will need to wear a sports bra for 6 weeks, which must be worn day and night during the first 3 to 4 weeks. For the remaining time, you only need to wear it during the day.

Your breasts will be smaller and firmer, but some scarring will always remain visible. The surgeon will aim for absolute symmetry when the procedure is performed on both breasts, but it cannot be guaranteed. The shape and sensitivity of the nipples may also be different than what you expected.

You should realise that a breast reduction or breast lift procedure does not include a correction of the excess tissue underneath the armpits and, possibly, towards the back. A slackening process that has already started will continue after this reshaping surgery and it may ultimately have an adverse effect on the original result.

Gaining weight in general, pregnancies, or the use of a birth control pill can make the breasts heavier again. The plastic surgeon cannot guarantee a certain cup size after the surgery.

Risks and complications

There is always the risk of complications. The forming of excess connective tissue may cause the scars to heal differently. It may sometimes be necessary to have a second surgery in order to get a good final result. This additional surgery can result in extra costs which you usually have to pay for yourself.
